Chapter Seven
Sunday night, Alice was baking up a storm for a wedding reception coming up on the weekend. She was doing her normal routine, which included trying things out and practicing for when she would really make the order. A round of cute cupcakes she had painted yellow birds on sat on the counter, but she wasn’t happy with them. She searched for different patterns on her phone.
A knock at the front of the shop startled her as she wasn’t expecting anyone. It was about eight o’clock and the shop had been closed for three hours. She looked up with flour spread all the way across her forehead and saw Knoll standing outside. Her heart fluttered with excitement. He had come back!
She moved over to the door, wiping her hands on her apron and unlocked it for him.
“Hi.” She held the door open, not sure if he wanted to come in.
“Hi, may I come in?”
“If you still want to after my fun display of crazy the other night.”
“Alice.” He pushed past her and walked behind her counter, bending over so his arms were on it. The flour there covered the sleeves of his nice black suit jacket. She didn’t really want to point that out to him. Man, why does he have to look so amazing?
“I don’t think you’re crazy, Alice. I know my way of doing things isn’t everyone’s way of doing things. It was wrong of me to have you come to The Club when we’re just getting to know each other.”
“I didn’t help by staying quiet about it. I gave no indication that I was uncomfortable with what you were suggesting. From now on I’ll be honest with you about things.”
“Okay, so we are going to start over and take it easy on The Club until, or if, you decide you are ready. Tell me what you’re doing here.” He wiped the flour off of his sleeves and she walked over to the counter.
“I’m practicing for a wedding reception this weekend.”
“Practicing?”
“Yes, I practice when I bake to make sure the things I envision don’t look like shit when I create them. If they look bad when I practice I know I have to go a different route.”
“Doesn’t that just waste your inventory?” He was examining the little bird cupcakes.
“No, because I still sell them in the shop or use them for photographs that advertise what I can do. I have a huge portfolio because of the practice runs. I am working on getting a more updated website and Lucy and I are going to design an ad for the paper.”
“That will be great.”
“What are you doing here?”
“Watching you work. Or, I could help. I would take great pleasure in cooking with you.”
“Pleasure is your favorite word, isn’t it? What’s the deal, do you just like the way it sounds?”
Knoll smiled sweetly. She was expecting a snarl at the question or a simple ‘are you an idiot’ and instead she got sweet. “Pleasure is the greatest thing humans can give to each other in the kitchen or,” he lowered his voice, “the bedroom.
